From Ligue 1 to superstardom: Marcel Desailly

Legendary centre-back Marcel Desailly captained France to a World Cup but he made his name at Marseille on the way to the first Champions League title
From Ligue 1 to superstardom: Marcel DesaillyAt, 6ft 1in (1.86m) and 12.5 stone (80kg), Marcel ‘The Rock’ Desailly is more of a mighty oak or a towering redwood. But his strength, toughness and unyielding nature at the heart of some of Europe’s finest defences led to his rather stonier nickname.
“’The Rock’ was amazing,” said former teammate, Gustavo Poyet. “He was a winner, which we appreciated at Chelsea.”
“He was a beast to play against,” said ex-Liverpool and England striker Michael Owen. “As quick as anyone, as strong as anyone, virtually impossible to play against.”
The man who played behind him at Marseille and for the World Cup-winning France team agreed: “Marcel was less of a leader and more of a warrior,” said goalkeeper Fabien Barthez. “Desailly was a rock.”

Born in Accra, the capital of Ghana, as Odenke Abbey, he took the name Desailly when his mother married a French diplomat and relocated to France in 1972, when he was four.
His father hoped he’d go into academia, but the youngster fell in love with football at school and followed his half-brother Seth Adonkor to Nantes’ renowned youth team. There he slotted into central defence alongside a young Didier Deschamps. He broke into the Nantes reserves at 17 and made his professional debut at 18.

Dempsey continues to fight winning battle against father time

At 34, Clint Dempsey probably shouldn't still be a key starter for the U.S. national team, but he showed Friday he's still too good to cast aside.
Dempsey continues to fight winning battle against father time
SAN JOSE, Calif. — The 2018 World Cup isn't really that far away time wise. Less than 15 months in fact, which isn't all that long unless you're a player edging toward the end of his career, knowing he can't take months, let alone years for granted.
This is why Clint Dempsey, fresh off a highlight-filled hat trick, wasn't about to take for granted his place at the 2018 World Cup (assuming the U.S. qualifies). Asked if he thinks he could see himself playing in the next World Cup—when he would be 35— Dempsey acknowledged it's far from a sure bet, but made it clear it remains a motivating factor.

Livermore feared career was over after failed drugs test

Personal tragedy put the midfielder's career in doubt, but this week he completed a remarkable turnaround by running out for his country.
Livermore feared career was over after failed drugs testEngland's Jake Livermore feared that he would never play again after failing a drugs test in the aftermath of his son's death in 2014.
Livermore was with Hull City when the tragedy struck and he took cocaine to help deal with the grief, which led to a suspension.
However, when the Football Association learned of the circumstances, no further action was taken.
Still the whole episode left Livermore a long way from contemplating a return to playing and the thought of adding to the solitary international cap he had won in 2012 never crossed his mind.
But on Wednesday the West Brom midfielder started in the friendly defeat against Germany to complete a remarkable turnaround.

I'm not just a tall N'Golo Kante, says Leicester City's Wilfred Ndidi

The Foxes midfielder has been brought in to replace the outgoing Frenchman but insists that he cannot be compared to the tireless Chelsea star
I'm not just a tall N'Golo Kante, says Leicester City's Wilfred NdidiWilfred Ndidi has played down comparisons to N'Golo Kante as he helps to repair the damage caused by the loss of the box-to-box midfielder at Leicester.
Leicester City are the current Premier League champions, but the £17 million midfielder arrived at a club in turmoil, with manager Claudio Ranieri sacked shortly after he arrived as they languished near the relegation zone.
Craig Shakespeare has steadied the ship while Ndidi has become a key cog in Leicester's first team, with some commentators suggesting he plays a similar role at the France international, who moved to Chelsea from the King Power in the summer.
"No, I have never put myself in Kante’s shoes," Ndidi told Goal. "I didn’t look to play like him when I arrived. I just came here to play my own game. I just feel like a different player to him.

Aguero still king of the one thing Pep can't teach him - goals

The Argentine striker set Manchester City on their way against Sunderland but probably wouldn't have been in the team had Gabriel Jesus remained.
Aguero still king of the one thing Pep can't teach him - goals

Sergio Aguero might not ever be able to do all that Pep Guardiola asks him to do - consistently, anyway - but he remains king of his own realm.
He is not adaptable enough out wide to give Raheem Sterling or Leroy Sane a sustained spell up top, although it was momentarily Sterling, not Aguero, haring through the middle when Sane scored from the left wing just after half time.

Aguero scored the first goal here against Sunderland just before half time. It was Manchester City’s first shot on target.
Sunderland to that point had competed well - as they have done against Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham here this season - but that goal was a pin prick to their ambitions.
